The Road to Synchronicity

Every Coincidence is an opportunity for you to become the person the Universe intends you to be
Deepak Chopra

One book that I really love to read again and again is “Synchrodestiny” by Dr Deepak Chopra. I’ve had my copy in mint condition since past 10 years and every time I grab hold of it, I understand something new and the revelation usually lasts for days to follow. One thing it talks about in length is the importance of meaningful coincidences in life and how there is no such thing as ‘happened by chance’ rather it all happens for a reason, a bigger cause. To think of it, our entire existence is one meaningful coincidence, a sperm cell competing with 250 million others to fertilize that one egg and voila! We take form. Is the universe trying to tell us something?

Coincidence means you are on the right path

Think about the last coincidence that happened in your life that really took you by surprise. Like you were listening to a song on radio and it reminded you of a friend whom you haven’t talked to in years and the same day you bump into that friend! This is Synchronicity: a series of events that appear significantly related but have no real time causal connection. To dissect it further, you know your part of this occurrence but what made your friend reach the same point as you for the meeting to take place? It cannot be true that she was also thinking about you by listening to the same song as you did; now that would be creepy right! Both the events aren’t related but your meaningful coincidence has a lot of Intel to give you. She tells you that she works for a publication and is an assistant to the children’s book editor and you have just finished writing a book! Put the two and two together and this one happy coincidence becomes instantly a meaningful directive that holds the bigger pieces of your future together.

The Universe is always speaking to us…sending us little messages, causing coincidences and serendipities, reminding us to stop, to look around, to believe in something else, something more
Nancy Thayer

I’ve had my own share of such coincidences; the most recent one was seeing the word ‘Sahaj’ everywhere a few days back. I saw it written behind an auto and the same day I saw it in the newspaper in some printed advert. The very same day, my husband informs me of a three day meditation program called “Sahaj Marg” which he had enrolled for. I’m too lazy for such activities but since reading Synchrodestiny I do pay heed to such coincidences and decided not to let it drift away. So I accompanied him and found it to be one of the most fulfilling and enriching experiences of my life.

There have been many coincidences recorded in the history that are mind boggling. The one I would quote here is both hilarious yet uncanny! We all know about Mark Twain the famous American writer, entrepreneur, publisher and lecturer. And we all know about Halley’s Comet that moves in an orbit that takes 75 years to approach near earth. When this comet neared Earth in 1835, Mark Twain was born. In his own words, he said:
"I came in with Halley’s Comet…it is coming again…and I expect to go out with it…the almighty has said, no doubt: ‘Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together’"
And his prophecy was fulfilled when he died on April 21, 1910 as Halley’s Comet neared the Earth again!

Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous

As Dr Chopra writes in his book, Synchrodestiny contains a purpose and meaning and has a direction and intention to veer you away from path of troubles to a more profound existence. It is only human to caste-off all such lucky incidents because of a lack that exists in our own awareness. Here is a short Zen story that explains this:

There is a parable about a poor man walking through the woods reflecting upon his many troubles. He stopped to rest against a tree, a magical tree that would instantly grant the wishes of anyone who came in contact with it. He realized he was thirsty and wished for a drink. Instantly a cup of cool water was in his hand. Shocked, he looked at the water, he decided it was safe and drank it. He then realized he was hungry and wished he had something to eat. A meal appeared before him. "My wishes are being granted," he thought in disbelief. "Well, then I wish for a beautiful home of my own," he said out loud. The home appeared in the meadow before him. A huge smile crossed his face as he wished for servants to take care of the house. When they appeared he realized he had somehow been blessed with an incredible power and he wished for a beautiful, loving, intelligent woman to share his good fortune. "Wait a minute, this is ridiculous," said the man to the woman. "I'm not this lucky. This can't happen to me." As he spoke…everything disappeared. He shook his head and said, "I knew it," then walked away thinking about his many troubles.

Do not let these coincidences pass away from your consciousness like a sunken stone in water. They carry with them intelligent messages that have the power and intent to shape your life in a more meaningful manner. Once we become attuned to these strange occurrences, they will no longer seem outlandish rather they will become our everyday miracles. All we have to do is to keep an eye, and train our minds to see good in everything that happens! Since it started with coincidence, it might end with one too!
